No picture on Mac Power G3

By jardinier ·
I have a Macintosh Power G3 with a very nice 17 in CRT monitor, running OS 10.2 and OS 9.2

HOWEVER, unless left for (usually) at least a week, the monitor will not be activated on start-up.

ON the occasions that the picture does appear, mostly it allows only one display size -- 640 X 480.

Sometimes if restarted immediately it will boot up with the full range of available displays.

The software has been freshly reinstalled to no affect. So where is the problem?

The video state is not being reset properly.
Try a quick reseating of the boards and chips.
Listen for any clicks or pops while reseating,
this could indicate a connactor going bad.
Some times they just work themselves loose
during the repeated hot and cold cycles.

so if you get it nice and warmed up (a week??) will it come back on if you turn if off and right back on for a test? does thumping it do anything? (rdl)
i think it is always worth pulling off the video cable and visually inspecting both ends for bent pins or other bad connection...
i've got an lcd monitor over here doing the same thing. in my case, the monitor is bad...
if you, i would move the monitor to another computer to see if the problem moves with the monitor. (if it is a standard vga connector you can use it on a ibm compatible pc)
i would run the monitor thru it's self tests ditto (unplug it from the pc and play around with the front panel till you find the self test-it will probably run automatically power it up off the pc.) if the monitor checks out ok somewhere else, i would bet it is the video card...

Try the monitor on a different computer. Same problem. Monitor.

No problem. Computer.

Then change the video card.

Thank you No 1. At least you know that there is NO video card because the video chip is on the motherboard.

As for Nos 2 and 3, as you refer to a video card, then I must presume you are only guessing and do not know the particular machine.

In the meantime I have located a person in Sydney who actually knows about Macs and he mentioned the monitor itself as the only likely culprit.

As there is now no picture at all, I reckon the monitor has died.

This person in Sydney can supply me for $AU 300 with a G 4 with specs sufficient to fun the latest OS 10.4

I don't like rejecting answers but when they indicate an obvious lack of knowledge of the machine, then my guess would probably have been better than yours.

I will now close this question. Thank for trying.
