No print local, can print from network?

By jrcarver ·
What is the problem that I cannot print to my local laser printer, but can print (to its printer) from any other system on the network. Also will not print sample from local, but can remotely. Win 98 SE, 512 megs ram, 60% hd open, replaced parallel driver, replaced printer driver, replaced printer, same results.

No print local, can print from network?

You don't say what type of printer you have so I'm going to take a shot in the dark.

1- are your lpt ports available? Check through Control Panel->System and see if the lpt port is listed and enabled.

2- Check the version of lpt.vxd. It has been reported that some HP laserjets update this file and that there are some compatibility issues with win98. If this file is newer than the one that came with win98 (should be dated 4/23/99) then rename your current one and replace it with the original win98 one. To get the original one back the easiest way is to use sfc.exe. You might have to replace your vmm32.vxd file also. Either rename your existing files or copy them out for safe keeping just in case.

Let us know what happens.

Is is a Lexmark Optra Rt. I had a Epson Photo 750 there it did the same thing, except that you could not print from another system on the network. As for lpt.vxd, it is the right version and date. Used sfc and it found 8 corrupts files which is replaced. Also used it to install vmm32.vxd. Uninstalled driver, re-started, installed new drivers, re-started, tried to print a test page, it stated it "Can not find printers . . .". Went to other computer on network, it printed to the Optra on this system quite well. Changed to vmm32.vxd, same results.
I'd sure love to know the cure, any other with knowledge, let me hear it.

Are you using Lexmark's Network Printer Monitor on this pc? On the pc with the Lexmark attached to it, what printer port does it show it is using in the properties page?

No, I'm not using Lexmark's monitoring, this is an older printer. As for the properties of the printer on this computer, it lists that it is using Lpt1, and when the properties of Lpt1 is check it is using the standard address, assigned automatically.

go to a command prompt and enter "net use" Does your system report that the lpt port is redirected?? Try and 'copy' a simple text file out to the printer from the command prompt i.e 'copy myname.txt LPT1: <ret> Does the text file get printed??? Next check the print properties in the printer folder. Make sure the print to file option isn't selected and that you are indeed printing to LPT1.

Did as listed, net use from a dos prompt, did not report anything as being redirected, "There are no entries in the list". On trying to print a text file to lpt1, it was nice, I got to see the black screen of death immediately when I hit <Ent>. I then hit Ctl-Alt-Del and got the blue screen of death. I didn't get the error number, but it was locked up to where I had to manually force it off. It restarted as usual.
