No Resources Available to Client on RAS
LockedDespite much info about RAS here, I haven’t found anything that EXACTLY matches my problem. Hope someone can send a clue my way.
I am setting up a new server for a customer. Due to their limited budget, I’m forced to stay with the NT package for awhile longer. The old server is still chugging away, so I have a rare chance to experiment. The customer mentioned they’d like to have dialup access on the new system and I assured them it would be no problem.
I lied.
Here’s what we have. NT 4.0, Service pack 6a, Microsoft supplemental security release and all available patches to date. I set the server up as Primary Domain Controller (different from the existing domain), DHCP, RAS, TCP/IP only, External 56K USR V90/92 Modem on COM1,no other serial devices. Default users + myself as full access member of all groups, Dialup permission granted to my userid only, all drives shared to myself only, no domain trusting, ip forwarding enabled. Connected to a LAN and Router through a T1 to outside ISP for web access, NAT handled by the isp, gateway to the isp, 3 DNS addresses for web searching, no WINS, Static IP on outside of isp firewall, translated to the local 192,168.1.XXX addresses inside. Test client works fine with WIN 98on Ethernet LAN in the building.
Hope I didn’t leave anything out. Then I tried to set up RAS.
Two remote clients used as test. One with Win98, one with XP. Server will answer the call, validate the login and the client…..
Just sits there with a useless connection. I’m logged in to the machine…I have an assigned IP from the DHCP, but my client plays the Col. Klink routine and sees nooooothink. Event viewer on the server happily reports that I was validated as a user and was connected for xx min.s, xx sec.s. Uh-huh. XP Client reports that it can’t find the DNS, won’t join the domain, but WILL join as a workgroup member. Any ideas?TIA
