I would reinstall the drivers that came with your motherboard.Although Windows ME is meant to support most sound cards,it is always prudent to install the drivers for the mother board from the disks that came with the motherboard.

If your system originally came with W95 or W98 installed, the drivers that came with it may not work with Me.

You need to identify the mfg of the sound card or codec.

You can go to www.priorityonesupport.com to get detailed info on your system. They may even have Me drivers.

If they do not have Me specific drivers, take the information on your sound card, and go to www.driverguide.com to locate the web site for the mfg, and download the Me drivers from them.

Stephen,

Does Winodws play any sound events?
Look in the control panel for a sounds/multimedia icon. Open it and try clicking on a couple of sound events to see if they play.

Does a standard Audio CD play?

Your device manager might also behelpful. It will at least let you know if there is a conflict (IRQ, DMA, etc..)

How current are the sound drivers? Pay a visit to the Packard Bell website and see if they offer a fix. Or you can always identify the hardware (soundcard) and look the driver up yourself.

Did you try to delete the device from the device manager and rebooting and see if Windows ME will recognize it? Make sure you have the drivers for the sound card.

I have found Packard bell use SoundBlaster compatible soundcards you could try putting it in as a 16 bit SoundBlaster some times works.
