No Sound

By charshbarger ·
I've been trying to reinstall a sound card driver, but cannot, no matter what I've tried (Windows update, Service pack 2 etc.) This has happened after upgrading from Windows 98SE to Windows XP Pro. I would have thought XP would have found all the drivers, but not this one. It's a Sis7012 driver. Can I get help with this?

You most likely need an updated audio driver.

If your sure the sound chip is an SiS 7012, I recommend using the reference driver from SiS.

Start here:

Select Windows XP, Audio Driver, and SiS7012

Click on "GO", and you will be taken to the download.

The file is a ZIP archive. Extract the files to an easy to locate folder (C:\Drivers\SiS\).
Then look for a readme or other text or document file with the install instructions.

You may need to fully uninstall the existing driver before the new driver will install.

last time this happened to me, things worked fine when i hooked up another set of (non-digital) speakers. did you try this with an ear bud?
are you getting bangs in device manager?
what other cards are in the system? maybe you have a pre-set pci slot or another pnp card set to a 'hard-coded' resources or some other interrupt conflict...
