No sound but from audio CD!

By gventura ·
I have a clone computer running windows 98 with a ESS 1868 sound card producing no sound but out of a music CD.
I have replaced this card with a soundblaster (good card) to verify the card and I have the same problem. I have also replaced motherboards, as it's been a lingering issue, to no avail. Could there be an issue with the hard drive?

Thanks for your help.

No sound but from audio CD!

The CD-Rom will not play an audio CD if there is not a cable directly connecting the sound card to the CD-rom. A cable should have been shipped with your cd-rom drive to connect it to your sound card. This is the only way that the CD-Rom will play amusic CD. Of course if this cable is installed and working properly you would also want to check out your settings to make sure that you do not have the CD sound muted, but I'm sure that was the first thing that you checked.

There is a dual audio cable that needs to be attached to your cd rom and the other end should fit in the white connector on the sound card.make sure your drivers are updated.

Make sure you have the latest drivers for the sound card.
The HardDrive should not make any problems for the sound.
The fact that the sound from the CD-ROM works is b/c the audio CD use analog sound instead of digital sound from the computer (thats why when your computer freezes if a CD-ROM is playing it will continu untill you shut down the computer).
Also make sure you have the latest drivers for your motherboard.
If its a PCI sound card then try moving it to a different PCI slot on the motherboard.
Also make sure that your motherboard dosnt touch the metal surface its attached to, which if it does will short the motherboard.

Maybe we can help each other here by comparing notes. I think I have a similar problem: Windows 95 with ESS 1868 with no sound except out of a music CD. Mine was working for a long time, but quit working within past month or two.

GV, If you read the following and think I have a different problem, let me know and I will start my own question. But if you think my problem is similar, I'd like to hang around here till we get these resolved.

My track has been that is may be a Window configand/or device issue. I figured I probably "shot myself in the foot" during somekind of software install or someother messing around with the system.

An app named AudioRack came with my sound card. When I try the volume control in this app, I get "Could not find any mixer devices." When I try the Digital Audio Player, I get "Could not find any wave devices." When I try the MIDI Player, I get "Could not find any MIDI devices."

There are no obvious (to me) conflicts shown in the device manager. The device status for the devices named ES1868 Control Interface and ES1868 Plug and Play AudioDrive both show, "This device is working properly."

But I have removed and reinstalled the device drivers for both of these devices. I have alsoremoved and reinstalled the Microsoft MCI devices named Wave Audio device and MIDI Sequencer device. Still no change.

My next step is to try some of the tasks listed in
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q142/7/31.asp
but I don't have time to try them right now.

Hope this helps.

Not sure if we have the same problem but the result sound the same. I'm not getting any errors or conflicts in device manager nor sound from windows. I have installed the drivers from the manf. site, and Win98.

Thanks

First thing to do is remove AudioRack, that app hosed a personal PC at home. Once I removedit that helped. Also, check the settings in Volume control, then check to make sure you don't have cable reversed.

The computer doesn't have any of that type of software.

Thanks
