no sound from cd player

i inherited a homemade computer from daughter with 98Se. it played and recorded cds ok. i installed w2kpro and won't play or record cds, and won't recognize sound card. any suggestions? thanks much

You need to identify the sound card, or the sound system on the motherboard, and install the Windows 2000 drivers for the sound device.

As well as the above answer, you should also make sure that Sound is enabled in the BIOS. You can access the BIOS when your computer starts up, often by pressing the DEL or F2 key.

If the sound is enabled, you should access Device Manager and make sure the sound device is being recognised. Also, depending on the make of the machine, you may need to download and install a specific driver - even if onboard sound is used.
