No sound from on board sound device.

    by sloowwhand ·

I just finished building a PC and do not get any sound from my speakers. Motherboard is a Soyo K7VTA-Pro, Chipset is VIA KT-133A with 686B AGP. The on board audio is AC-97, Sigmatel AC Codec Chip. Processor is an AMD 1.33 Ghz Athlon Tbird 266 Mhz FSB. The OS is Win98se. Everything is working great except I do not get any sound from my speakers. The speakers work on another PC ok. In BIOS the on board sound chip is enabled. I have installed the correct driver from the MB CD and also downloaded updated drivers from the Soyo-Tech web site and still no sound. Thanks for any help with this.

First off sorry you bought a soyo. I loved that mainboard at the time they came out. It was great with PNP cards and auto setting up DMA and IRQ. I still have the old 300 mghz board that I use on my home computer. But the new ones are vary buggy. Ifyou can buy another mainboard.

Check the Devicwe Manager to see if their is a exclamation mark besides the sound or multimedia
      Check for any IRQ,DMA,I/O conflicts

Open the Control Panel, then click on the Multimedia icon and make sure that the sound volume is not muted, you should also chec to see if the multimedia is enabled in Windows Setup

Recheck and make sure that you have the audio cable connected from the cd-rom to the sound card

Check the sound board software is installed properly

Thanks for responding. All of your tips I checked before posting my question. I did check for conflicts in Device Mangaler\No Conflicts there. Sound Volume is not muted. Multimedia is enabled. CDROM audio cable is connected properly. If you read my question, drivers also installed properly. Thanks again.

Download the latest audio driver for the 686 chipset from http://www.viaarena.com

Un-install the sound chip, and any sound applications that installed when you installed the drivers from the CD.
Create a folder for the sound driver on your hard drive, and extract the files.

Boot, and disable the on-board sound.
Clear out what remnants of the sound driver that you can find.
      Shut down.
Boot, and enable the sound chip.
When Windows finds the sound chip, point the driver wizzard to the folder with the drivers.

If Windows didn’t ask for the Windows CD when you originally installed the sound chip, it should ask for it now.

I followed your advice and it did not work. I don’t think your advice is faulty…….I think the MB is at fault. I think that your advice would have worked in a normal situation. The 686 driver was the same one that I initially downloaded from the Soyo web site. I even downloaded and installed the famous 4in1 driver from the viaarena site hoping against hope that it would work. Next step is to contact Soyo Tech support. If we determine the MB is faulty then I’ll just install a PCI sound card. I am definetly not installing and configuring another MB. Thanks again.

Since you have onboard sound, don’t bother checking for audio cables, it should work with IDE cable. Check your mainboard’s installation CD, see if there’s software for AC-97 codec for Win98. Make sure ALL required software was installed.

On this particular MB there is no dongle cable (IDE if that is what you are referring to) for the sound. The speaker connectors are built right in the MB and are at the back panel. I did install the AC-97 codec for Win98 from the MB CD and also downloaded the updated driver from the Soyo web site with out any success. Thanks for your response on this.

One thing to check, you are using amplified speakers aren’t you? The older ones did not have amplification as the sound boards had the amplifier internally. Just a thought.

This is not an older MB. It supports AMD 1.33 Ghz Athlon Tbird with a 256 Mghz FSB. Thanks for your response.

Well as you say you have a proper driver, proper setup, the OS installed run smoothly except, the sounds. (Hope You get done all the sound parameters in Windows)

May be it is physical problem of the built-in sound card. Go to your vendor and replace it. That’s the best thing to do…

Thank you for your response. I did some research on answer #3 from “Chas”. I will be trying his tips out and if that does not work then I will try to get some Tech Support from Soyo (God Help Me if it comes to that). Which most likely will mean replacing the MB. I will be trying #3 this morning. I will keep you posted.
