No sound on Laptop

Averatec 3250- Although Device Manager shows no problem with the Sound card or drivers (no yellow or red), I get absolutely no sound out of my laptop speakers.? Ditto when using any one of several headphone sets.? I ran the diagnostic within the windows sound settings, and it says everything is fine.? The sound check, when using a microphone headset, appears to function correctly with the gauge properly registering movement in both the mic and speaker mode.? But nothing comes out!? Nothing in the windows audio settings is muted.? Ditto in the Real Player settings (I saw that as a possible solution on another site.?) the volume wheel is in the max volume position. I uninstalled and re-installed the Via AC’97 sound card using the original device drivers. I am running Win XP Sp2. (didn’t work w/ SP1, either) 1 GB ram. There are no auto updates from Windows installed. I’m thinking this is a windows rather than a hardware issue. but not sure either way. Does anyone also know of an inexpensive external sound card option, like a pcmcia or usb?Any suggestions or solutions?
