I have never seen an error message in Win98 which says No System Files. I have seen a message which says no system disk. If the latter you can try the following:

Create a boot disk (floppy) using another Windows 98 computer. Boot from the floppy and type the following at the command prompt:

sys c:

then press enter.

If this does not work, boot from the floppy and copy the WIN98 folder from the CD to the hard drive. Then run Setup.exe from the hard drive. This will reinstall Windows 98.

Let us know how you get on.

Good luck

I know that this sounds so obvious but have you checked BIOS to see if the HDD is being recognised?

I would also run some HDD Diagnostic tools over the drive to make sure that it's working correctly. If you don't know the drive makers name you can use the Seatools from Seagate available at

Or you can use the Ultimate Boot CD available from

You may need to change the Boot Order in BIOS to boot from the CD drive but it's quite easy to do and if you use the Ultimate Boot CD it has quite a few different Tools available on it to test various things if necessary including the HDD Testing Tools.
