No Valid CD-ROM device drivers selected

By robert.walsh ·
When installing new hardware, I received a Windows Protection error at startup. I rebooted to the command prompt to enter the command "mscdex.exe /s /v /d:mscd001", because my CDROM drive(D:) was not being recognized, and I could only run in Safe Mode. The error I received, is "No valid CDROM device drivers selected" when I used this command from C:\Windows\Command. How do I fix this? The hardware I was installing at the time this error happened was a CD-RW drive from Iomega as a Slave to the CD-ROM already there, sharing the same cable to the secondary IDE slot.

1) Maybe a jumper problem; Have you set the jumper for master or slave?
2) Maybe the CD-RW is not recognized by your win (win2000?); search the hardware page of your CD venor (if it happens to be Ricoh; then it maybe; which I have encountered once).

Bless you!

Hi!
To make the "mscdex..." command work, you have to load the CD:s drivers in config.sys, by having a statement like:
DEVICE=(PATH)\CDROM.SYS /D:CD01
Then the mscdex command may work, if you take care to use the same drive designation (D:CD01) as in the line in config.sys. Cdrom.sys is assumed to be replaced by the correct driver file for your CD.
