No VLAN support on Cisco 1720

By smajot ·
Hi guys,

I'm trying to create several vlans on a 1720 router. IOS is IP PLUS IPSEC 3DES.

I'm running into problems when I try to add the "encapsulation dot1q" command in the subinterface.

duststorm(config)#int f0.10

duststorm(config-subif)#encapsulation dot1q?
% Unrecognized command
duststorm(config-subif)#encapsulation dot1q 10?
% Unrecognized command
duststorm(config-subif)#encapsulation dot1q 10
% Invalid input detected at '^' marker.

I was under the impression that IP PLUS feature set allows vlans. Not to mention Cisco's vlan walkthrough for 1700 series says it should work:

Any ideas?

1720 - no vlan support

by smajot In reply to vlan 1700 router

I came across a cisco doc a while ago... can't remember which one now. it basically said that the 1720 does not have vlan support. it was added to the 1700 series in the 1721 model.

no vlan support

Have you issued the switchport command to make it a switchport rather than a routed port? Did this on an 1841 once, but never tried it on a 1700 series router.

I can verify that

The 1720 does not support the encapsulation dot1q command and the 1721 does.
