Non-erasing Names In Network Neighborhoo

By caffeinejim ·
Each time a Win98 client is renamed in our NT environment, the old name remains, as well as the new name. Obviously the old name cannot be accessed, but the icon is there in the Network Neighborhood. Any suggestions in removing them?

You may try flushing the NETBIOS cache using the netstat command.

There is probably only temporary. Your domain master browser will only remove the netbios name of a computer if it does not respond to three consecutive broadcasts. Then it does not make this change to backup browsers for up to 54 minutes after the computer has been removed. Hope this helps.

One of the above answers has the right idea. The NetBios name has not been flushed. Try the command that they suggest then if that doesn't work... the colperate maybe WINS. Every now and then your WINS server may need a good cleaning. If you have mulitple WINS server on multiple subnets the need to do a regular cleaning is more apparent. You could (a) delete the indvidual entries in WINS or (and what I would suggest) (b) Flush the WINS database on the server(s).

I hope that helps,

Sorry.. we don't have WINS installed on our servers.. but maybe it's high time we think about it. Thanks.
