Hello all, I’m wondering if anyone could offer any advice on the best route to take to move into managing IT for the non-profit sector. I’ve grown a bit frustrated with my work in corporate America and am looking for a change. I just feel that there’s got to be something more rewarding for me out there. I’ve heard through other colleagues that the non-profit sector could offer a bit of relief along with some new challenges. Based on my qualifications below, i’m wondering if you could recommend how I could leverage my experience to make the switch?
I currently work as a programmer developing software, and database applications for a bank. I also have experience in Network Support. I have a Bachelors Degree in IT, and I am working on a Masters Degree in Information Resource Management (to be completed next Summer). My master’s program is giving me more of a well-rounded education in the business side of IT, ie Financial Management, Project Management, and Research Methods for Managers. So my questions are as follows:
1) How should I leverage my experience to move into managing IT for a non-profit considering I’ve never had any formal management experience. Most of my leadership experience comes from managing software development projects.
2) In addition to my Master’s degree, should I pursue a graduate certificate in Public Administration? Is this necessary to get a job managing in non-profit?
3) What are some good resources for non-profit jobs? Location isn’t a huge factor as I am willing to relocate myself.
4) Anyone that currently works for a non-profit, or has made the switch, could you please share your experiences?
Any advice that you could offer, I would truly appreciate it.
Thanks!
