norton antivirus live update from file

By maryj ·
Is there a means by which one pc (not the server in this case) can download the virus update files and then that file (name?) can be copied to an area where the other pcs on the network can access it and then "download" the file and perform an update locally?
Is there a batch file that can be scripted for this?

Yes you can from the following link -
http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/download.html

You must have a valid customer ID to download the latest virus files.

When you download the definition files copy them to a shared drive on the network ket say f:\1
HAve the users run the def file from thier pc and the update happens.

Using a logon bat to run the file after mapping the drives is also an option. But after the first day the line needs to be removed, granted that all users are logged in that day.

The line in the batch would be something like this

Run=f:\1\[filedate].exe

you can also copy host files and assign gateway addresses this way

Hope it helps

I just this week implemented such a plan on our network. Corp has not moved to Norton 2000 yet so I have to make sure over 100 workstations are updated. My solution---

Download the update file. Run it from a command line using the /extract <directory> switch. Then set up a bat file on the client PCs something like this:

net use v: \\servername\filelocation
v:
copy *.* localpcdirectory
net use v: /delete

This will copy the files, albeit EVERY day, to the local pc. You will have to substitute the correct directory names, of course. This is a little more overhead than I would like, but it gets the job done simply. Someone will also have to keep the files updated.

Feel free to email me or update my solution...I'm always open to better ideas! :)

Does anyone remember how to use a pipe(redirection) to create a file...?
\\machine\virusdefs\newdef.exe >>c:\update.txt

Then use an argument in your logon script... such as "if not exist c:\update.txt \\machine\virusdefs\newdef.exe >>c:\update.txt

to update your clients... NAV definition installer has switches as well for quite mode.

There also is an ftp download script on Symantecs site that can be customized to dl the newest updates... throw it at the AT scheduler and you can set upan almost totally automated virus definistion updater. You can also purchase the Symantec enterprise virus solution which uses the Symantec System Center to do alot of the above....

Any questions email me... Joel.Krall.PSINet@soc.mil
