Norton AV 10 – Unable to Scan

I have been working on this machine for a few days and I am having a few problems. First problem is that I am unable to uninstall Norton Anti Virus, I tried it in safe mode and I also tried using the installation cd to remove it, and it wont do it. My second problem is this: after I was able to enable the auto-protect feature (with a week of efforts) I am now unable to do any type of a scan, it just freezes up the program and ends up not responding.

I tried to set up a start up scan and after that everything has been problematic. Any advice would be appreciated, thank you in advance.
