I have spent all day with Norton Ghost 10.
My task is to create an image of laptop ntfs 20Gb HDD and then recover to new HDD.
It was not able to boot to XP and was repaired with chkdsk from XP installation CD.
Now it’s bootable and everything works normally, but apparently still has a problem and needs to be replaced asap as it doesn’t pass CHKDSK and slows down to “forever” at 90%.
I connected the laptop hdd as PATA secondary drive to desktop PC, in order to create a Norton Ghost image to desktop HDD and then recover it to new hdd.
Ghost fails with bad sectors disabled and when bads sectors are allowed to ignore spends forever creating image … and obviously I have to stop Ghost after 5 hours or waiting and still at 69%. The data amount is only 6Gb on 20Gb hdd.
I deleted all temporary files and emptied recycle bin. After first Ghost failure I read and copied successfully with explorer whole content back in order to make sure that used data area doesn’t have any problems. So it seems that Ghost is trying to recover something which isn’t essential and could be passed by.
The HDD has installed some specific programs which can’t be installed again easily. I still believe that this HDD may be cloned with some application, even when Ghost fails.
Any ideas? For several reasons I’d prefer to create an image first and not the direct disk to disk clone.
