Not able to download-run WINXP & FIREFOX

By bairnsmom ·
Firefox crashed when I was doing a search. Then my computer WINXP stopped me from opening and EXE files. I cannot download any of the "workarounds" from the internet. Nor can I access the helpctr.exe file to go to a previous restore point. I can open Firefox, Thunderbird and my Avast Firewall, by doing a right click. Please advise soonest. Thank you, Bairnsmom

This really sounds as if you have some kind of Infection

You can try downloading the Trinity Rescue Disc from here and scanning your computer but you'll need to do this on a clean computer not the one you are currently using.

While this is a Free download they do ask for Donations which you are not obliged to make.

You can also try to create a New User Account from the User Accounts Option in the Task Manager or booting in Safe Mode and selecting the Administrator Account to see if there is any difference.

Fix helpctr.exe with these steps

by pcs365_1 In reply to Not able to download-run ...

Hi bairnsmom,

From your posting, I understand that you are not able to access the helpctr.exe to go to a previous restore point on your computer. Below are the steps to fix it for Windows XP platform.

1) Go to Start/Run and type in: Helpctr.exe.
For some users this has restored the functionality in the Start Menu.
Go to Start/Run and type in: helpctr -regserver

If the above didn't help:

1) Check your settings here: Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:

2) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session

3) In the right pane if windir is listed under type as REG_SZ, it needs
to be changed to REG_EXPAND_SZ, Value Data: C\Windows.

If this is the case:

4) Go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment

5) Right click on Environment, then choose Export, name it and save it. Then go to the right pane, right click in an empty area and choose New/Expandable String Value. Name it windir. Then double click it and under Value data, type in: C:\WINDOWS

6) From there, right click and delete the windir which type was listed as REG_SZ then hit refresh (F5).

Do post the results (if working or not)
