I assume that you are booting from a floppy set to begin XP setup.

If you cannot boot from the CD drive, you can try booting from a W98 startup disk, and the running setup from the XP CD.

I would also try creating a new boot floppy set.

As a final work-around, mount the hard drive in a working PC, copy the XP cd onto the drive, and run setup from the hard drive.

Also, do you have enough free RAM on the system?
The startup files load into ram, and if you are short of ram, they may have run out of space to work with.

Try to download a program from microsoft which supports booting from cd if your cd can not boot from the cd rom.

One other thing, you may want to check your current HD for space and fragmentation. You'll need almost 1GB free (BEST) for installation. The best suggestion is to install from CD. A previous answer states use Win98 floppy with CD support. Best answer if you can't specify boot from CD in CMOS.
