Not accesible CD-ROM

By vmisanovic ·
I have a CD-ROM running on Compaq Pentium/Windows 95. Sometimes, it works fine. Then, it stops running without any obvious reason. When I put CD-ROM, a yellow indicator flashes shortly, and I got a message that there is an error. After I press enter I got a black screen and I cannot do anything but turn on/off computer. Control panel shows CD-ROM in my configuration and there are no configuration problems in Drivers Manager. In addition, I always get a message that I have an original and completely optimized configuration. A couple of times I repaired a problem by physically removing driver and putting back, without any rebooting or turning on computer. It did not work last time. Is it time to buy a new CD or it might be some other error.

The first thing I would suggest is to get an updated driver for the CD-Rom from either Compaq or the maker of the CD-Rom. Also have you cleaned the CD Drive using a cleaning disk? Also I would check that the IDE connecting cable is fully inserted into both the CD-Rom and the motherboard.

Don't panic!
Since your CD has reponse, so it is working.
1) Clean your CD-ROM with cleaning disk; if possible sometimes some alcohol drops (1 -2 drops) can help.
2) Clean your CD and see whether it has no dust or special marks on it. (Remarks: Don't use CD with privacy software or movie! Because the quality is poor, it kills your drive. Cheat CD-ROM has the same problem!)
3) If it continues to be working poorly, set your CD-ROM speed to a lower one. e.g. 8x to 2x
4) Updated your driver; but sometimes your computer cannot support it. So always has a previous driver as a reserve and you can change back to the previous one.
5) The last: buy a new one.
