Sound like the hard disk is unusable in its current state, go into bios and change the drive boot sequence to use the floppy drive first and use your boot disk. Then you should be able to run back through and fdisk or use partition magic to set the drive up.

In the bios does it show the HD? With the correct specifications (disk size, heads, cylinders)? Was there a possibility that the disk was being used in a compressed mode or a large disk support program (EZ Bios) was being used, this would account for being able to use partition magic and not have it boot afterward, restoring the old settings normally will restore the compressed disk/disk support settings, restoring file access/boot sector information.

Answer # 1 should get you access to theHD, if you can read the files on the HD, check with partition magic/fdisk to verify you have a primary DOS partition and it is the one you want to boot off. If so you can exit and do a sys a:(floppy or ?: CD Rom) c: (primary DOS partition), remove floppy/CD and reboot.
