Not all Network Shares showing on Win98

By johnm ·
I recently install a Win98(2ndEdition) box on my WinNT4 Network. When I check Network Neighborhood, I see all of the computers on the network. But when I open up the 'Server Computer', not all of the 'Shares' are listed. There are about 12 'Shares' total, but 3 shares (of course the most important) are missings. I can't figure out any other way to 'map' a drive to the missing shares..

Make sure that on the server, the users have permissions to the share not just the folder, also make sure that the share isn't hidden (C$ is hidden, C is visible through network neighborhood).

I am using the Administrator Account to install/setup all applications.

The shares that I can't see are the most popular shares on the network, and are not hidden.

(Note: But all the 'shares' in question have long file names. Maybe this is the problem.. Too much going on here today. I will have to check this out tonight after hours..

Thanks.

What 3 shares are missing ?
If c: d: you could map using \\server-name\c$ or d$
For others, use \\server name\share name

The 'shares' in question are Folders located on a WinNT4 Server.

I already tried to 'map' the folders in DOS via the 'net use' command.

It returns an error that the 'Share name' is not valid..

I think you answered your own question.
You're trying to map them in DOS and they have long filenames.
Even NT Shares should not be more than 15 characters and you should use underscores instead of spaces.

Windows 9x cannot browse shares, or use NET VIEW to see shares, that are greater than twelve characters in length or have spaces. However, the NET USE command can be used to map drives to these shares. For example:

c:\net use.exe x: \\servername\long share name

This would map a drive to the share.

Sorry, I rephrased my answer below because I'm not positive whether or not Win9x will NEVER see the shares.

Windows 9x has trouble seeing shares in Network Neighborhood, or seeing shares using NET VIEW, if the shares are greater than twelve characters in length or have spaces. However, the NET USE command can be used to map drives to these shares. For example:

c:\net use.exe x: \\servername\long share name

This would map a drive to the share.
