when I finally fell asleep last night (about 12:30am), I’d been up about 43 hours straight.

And no one said life was fair. I self medicate from time to time, but I don’t think that qualifies one as being proficient in the medical arts.

Frankenstein isn’t really scary, but rat movies give me the willies.

      • #3246257

        yeah well

        by jck ·

In reply to Yeah, I feel the same way. . .

there are so many people who did the cross-over to being a “technical” person in the 90s that it made being a tech person kinda bad. I mean, you deal with customers who had bad experiences after dealing with “web specialists” who had just learned to develop from a “…for Dummies” book 3 months before.

It’ll be a nice day when I can go over to the local law office and sit there and give advice for $250 an hour because I watched Perry Mason re-runs for years as a kid.

          I get a LOT of that…

          by jessie ·

          In reply to yeah well

They’re still out there… the know-nothing-techs… I worked on a helpdesk a couple years ago, where just about everytime I’d answer the phone, the user would say, “Oh Thank God it’s you!!! Now we can FIX my computer!” It was both flattering and frustrating… I mean, it’s nice to know that people think highly of my skills, but being one of (or the) only techs who can fix problems makes for a LOT of callbacks, and LOTS more work for everybody.

        • #3246244

          I can’t fault some people

          by jck ·

In reply to I get a LOT of that…

To be honest, I am HORRIBLE at diagnosing a lot of times over the phone. Sometimes because I don’t understand their descriptions, and even there is the occassion that they describe something I don’t remember seeing or have never dealt with on a PC.

But you put the mouse and keyboard in front of me hands-on and I earn my reputation as “computer geek”. I’m more visually-tuned to diagnosing things.

But yeah, I know what you mean. People who are doing support because they can read a script or follow call management software prompts. Dealt with those before.

Oh well…what corps do to make a buck…amazing sometimes.

        • #3246235

          Which is why…

          by jessie ·

In reply to I can’t fault some people

… I’ve always thought that a GOOD phone-tech should be paid more than a deskside tech… it’s so much EASIER when you’re right there in front of the computer… but that’s why you don’t see many GOOD phone-techs… as soon as they can, they get off the phones where they’re under-paid and under-appreciated to do a hands-on job where the money is better and the work is easier.

        • #3246228

          eh…

          by jck ·

In reply to Which is why…

I can’t say one is worth more than the other…because you can say their diagnostic skills or resolution memory is better because they don’t need to be in front of it, but how many phone techs don’t know the difference between PCI, PCI-E, AGP and CNR by just looking at them?

both have their value…just depends on which one is more valuable in the situation.

        • #3246219

          I said GOOD phone tech

          by jessie ·

          In reply to eh…

and a GOOD phone tech can not only recognize the difference between PCI, PCI-E, AGP, and CNR just by looking at them, but they can tell the difference by having a customer tell them what they look like, and can accurately describe them over the phone to a customer so that the CUSTOMER can recognize them.

I once walked an 84 year old man who was deaf as a post, who’d just bought his first computer, through replacing his motherboard, over the phone.

        • #3246215

          but

          by jck ·

          In reply to eh…

just like there are good phone techs with hardware knowledge…there are hardware guys that can do phone support too. They aren’t guaranteed in any mix.

And, the slot thing is just a simple example. The good ones are where you have a CPU out and the end user has no thermal grease and couldn’t tell you what kind it is unless he takes the processor apart from the fan, only to find that it was a model the company bought were they used a sticky thermal pad that will be ruined if you pull it off.

Like I said…some situations call for one talent over the other. To place a higher value in one time of person limits your staff to what they are capable of.

Personally, I like dealing with female techies more…smart chicks turn me on (that’s a swillish comment btw…trying to maintain my image) 😉

        • #3246195

          Nice… but you’ve missed my point entirely…

          by jessie ·

          In reply to eh…

Being in front of the computer, not having to rely on what the customer is telling you, or trying to force a user to tell you what they actually did to their computer, is BY FAR the easier of the two jobs. A GOOD phone tech (not a glorified secretary that just dispatches onsite techs) who can provide the same level of hardware/software support as someone who is in front of the computer is worth their weight in GOLD and should be paid accordingly!!!

And I’m more interested in smart female techie types too… at least they TRY to understand WTF I’m saying :p

          Both sexist pigs

          by jamesrl ·

          In reply to eh…

If I have a problem, I don’t care whether the person is male, female or somewhere in between, I just need it fixed. Neither sex has a monopoly on technical abilities or people skills.

When I ran a group of deskside techs, I would make them spend one week a year on the phones, and get the help desk to have their staff go out on calls with the desktop techs. It was amazing what a difference it made to both of them.

          Techs Phone vs Desk

          by tony hopkinson ·

In reply to Which is why…

Phone support is a skill all of itself. A good one is worth their weight in gold. They aren’t necessarily limited in what they know and a good one in what they can communicate, but in what they can do, when their hands are remotely operated by a potential disaster..
Had a few goes at it myself and I know I aren’t good at it. Having to explain what the grey squarey thing in the bottom left of the screen is more than once makes me audibly cross.

I always had time for the good ones, though walking two miles across the plant to find the monitor was unplugged used to me audibly and visibly cross as well.

          Been there

          by jdclyde ·

In reply to I get a LOT of that…

          done that.

But it wasn’t phone support, it was (and is) just support.

After I got hired in, my coworker got mad (and a little threatened by me) because people would walk PAST her office, down the hall and around the corner to my office to have me help them with something.

Before I came along the user was assumed to be too stupid to do anything for themselves. If the needed to copy a file to a floppy, instead of showing them how to copy my coworker would go to their desk and copy the file for them without explaining how to do it for themselves.

I showed them how to do for themselves and they learned they didn’t have to drop everything and find someone to cater to them for every little thing and it made them more efficient.

Two quotes I try to live by.

The job of the teacher is to make it so the student no longer needs the teacher.

Education teachs us how much is left to learn.
