not enough disk space

By jmh ·
When installing a software on Windows 98 PC with 128M I keep getting an error, "not enough disk space, please check ......"
When checking My Computer, 80% resources available.
What will cause this?

The error that you are getting is not referring to resources available, it is referring to hard drive space available. You did not list the size of your hdd, nor the space available - chk these things first. You may have temp files, chk files or other programs that you can remove to free up space, otherwise you need to upgrade your hdd to a larger model.

Hard disk has 1.4G available disk space. The same software, will load on another PC with Windows 98.

You didn't state which program you were trying to install. Believe it or not, this can be an issue. For instance, MGI has a fix posted on their site for the same problem you are describing - (the error message comes up during the direct x install portion of MGI Photosuite). First I would suggest you check with your product vendor to see if they have any known issues that you describe. If not, then on to the next...

I hope I'm correct in assuming that when you get the message, it's also offering to run the disk cleanup tool? If so, you can disable this sometimes annoying reminder. Here is a link to Microsoft's site that tells you how to disable that feature:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q193/6/83.ASP?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0&qry=disk%20space&rnk=26&src=DHCS_MSPSS_gn_SRCH&SPR=W98SE

Have you run scandisk and defrag lately? A clean drive is a happy drive! ;-)

Hope this stuff helps!

If this stuff doesn't help, please post what software you are trying to load, how big your hard drive is, and the exact full error message you are getting and when you are getting it (i.e. when you first try to install, during the install etc...) :-)

BTW: If you can't copy and paste that URL for the MS Knowledge Base, the article # is Article I Q188074.
