I don't think so

Having IT degree might be required, but being in touch with latest technologies and learning will be important

I have no degree at all, and I have a great salary. On of our exchange server admins has a archeology! I think that if you've got the brains and determination, you'll get a job and good salary in your chosen field.

Certs and degrees are nice to have but experience is invaluable.

Certs do provide the thrill of achievement and the motions of acquiring them will increase your knowledge. Mostly confirm what you already know or give you ideas. But IT is trialby fire, no other industry can show up your shortcomings as quickly.

No other industry with the exception, of course, of medicine.

Definitely not required to get a job

I think the most important issue the degree of experience and knowledge. However I can't deny that sometimes high pay does go with certification&degrees.
With enough experience in the field however that is also achievable, as long as we keep skills and knowledge update with the selected field we'd like to specialize in.
