Not paying your staff OT? Think twice...

Now this is in a financial institution, and it is with staff not paid as well as most IT people ($31k Canadian for 10 years exp, at the level of head teller). And that may have an influence.

The bank's position is that their official HR policy is that they pay OT, no questions asked.

The teller's position is that she has worked at 12 branches in 10 years, and in almost every case, she was asked to stay late, come in early, work an evening etc., on an ongoing basis. And that when submitted for OT on these occasions it was rejected.

It is alleged that bank branch manager policy is different than corporate policy.

Similar lawsuits in the US have been successful against Walmart and a few big banks.

I'd be interested in hearing whether this is common in the IT world. My company has a policy and I stick by it - we pay for OT.

give comp time at same rate. But OT has be pre-approved by the Superintendent.

My boss allows me to handle it the way I want to.

I chose to let my senior staff use their own discretion. I trust them not to abuse the privelege to determine whether or not they need to do overtime, at least to a point. If they are going to exceed 10 hours a week, I adk them to let me know.

Our jobs are contracted with each individual for certain money for certain time. Big advantage to workers is to finish early, get the same pay. Working late or extended time gets new contract and pay.

I get OT

OT for my job falls into two categories: billable and non-billable.

Billable OT is after-hours time spent in direct support of the client, either on service calls or projects. To get paid, I complete the client's standard work order form. My corporate then invoices the client, attaching a copy of the work order.

Any other OT, such as excess travel time, admin work, or parts processing, is non-billable (and non-reimbursable!). Corporate policy is that I recover this time by the end of the week by flexing a few days or by working a short day. If it happens on a Friday, I'm screwed. Needless to say, I avoid this kind of OT like the plague.

The only jobs where I did not receive OT were the military and teaching.
