Not seeing files on external drives

We had a power failure recently, the server went down, when it came back on could not see files but
the audio program can still access it.
The ext. drive stores the audio file. The server stores the cart file which access the audio files.
When youuse windows explorer to view files, the status is saying 0 ojbects:freespace 29.8GB. I need help, without reformating drive or explain what is happening.

Is the Ext drive on a network?? What was the drive letter assigned to the ext drive?? Can you go to a command prompt and access the ext drive ie dir m: ?? Since the audio program can still access the files makes it sound like a network share and theaudio program is accessing via share name not drive letter ie \\server\folder. How is the drive attached to server?? Since it appears that the drive still shows up in explorer you may want see if you can see the files in a command prompt if nothing shows up then try attrib *.* and see if any files are listed. If you can see the files from DOS then make a copy to another drive and run a check disk on it from my computer.

The drive on a network, assigned drive letter D: which is raid with 8 drives and is attached via scsi cable. Try the dir and attrib still not seeing the files in DOS.

Sounds like your master file table (or FAT, if not NTFS) got corrupted during the power failure. If you haven’t already, try running a scandisk/checkdisk on that drive to see if it fixes the problem. Also, have you verified the status of the array since the power failure? It’s possible that some damage was done to the RAID array and you may need to rebuild it or at least run a “verify with autofix” on the array itself – this is usually done through utilities supplied by the mfr. of the RAID card. Hope this helps!

This has help me, now I’m seeing some files with change symbols. These files have the same size and date of some file created after the failure. The last time I did a rebuild the files got corrupted, had to reformat and reload the file. Is it possible for files to be corrupted, if one of drives is remove which is suppose to be hot swappable? Is there some unstably with the system. The system is raid 5.

It sounds like a typical external SCSI problem to me. When the power was lost both devices shut off and then when it came back on the server probably just didn’t synch properly with the Cart drive.

I’d do a graceful shutdown and power off of both devices and try restaring first the SCSI device and then power up the server when the SCSI device is done initializing itself.

The scandisk idea is also quite good and I’d do that as well.

Sounds like you’re at a radio station.

Is it possible for files to be corrupted, if one of drives is remove which is suppose to be hot swappable? After the initializing it said ‘incomplete shutdown serverraid’ something to that effect.
