This happening for windows problem. You need the original Windows CD, start computer from CD and select repair option.

does the problem reproduce in Safe Mode?
what service pack and patch level?
any new devices or drivers lately?
anything in the event log?
my 2 cents: spyware.

I have a computer that is a stand alone that does this no matter what you do. It started off on Win 98 SE and continued doing the same thing on XP Pro.

I never did get to the bottom of the problem but the unit is still doing this and I expect will continue to as with numerous repairs and reloads it has continued.

Other than loading the latest drivers you just might have to learn to live with this.

By all means, check for spyware.

Do this too as a possible workaround. Create a shortcut on your desktop and make this the target:

%windir%\System32\SHUTDOWN.exe -f -s -t 01

This calls the shutdown command, forces programs to close, stops services and then shutsdown after one second.

Hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete and look at the task manager. You can then highlight whatever it shows as running and the hit the end task button. After which you should reboot in safe mode and do a virus scan as well as run Spybot S&amp. While you're in safe mode run defrag as well. The other choice is go to system restore and try restoring to a date before the problem cropped up. I hope you have a firewall and anti-virus protection installed.

If your OS is win98, there is a patch that fixes this shutdown problem. Check M$ site. Approx 480kB in size.
