Notebook fails to renew IP address

By bbennett ·
On an NT4-SP6 network, I have a user that travels from site to site with a Toshiba Notebook (w98se). Each time the user is at this location he must: run winipcfg, release all, renew all to renew an IP address. At that location I'm using an Intel internet sharing device acting as the DHCP server. This is the only location we have this problem, but several other notebook users can login and check their email without going through the "renew all" process. I've ordered a new NIC for the notebook, but really have no other ideas to try. I checked the TCPIP properties for the NIC card and everything seems consistent with other notebooks (compared to my own).

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Belinda

Notebook fails to renew IP address

by chris hirst In reply to Notebook fails to renew I ...

One possibility is that the laptop is trying to use the same TCP/IP address as the DHCP issuer at this site. At other sites the TCP/IP will be assigned according to the last logon (unless it is greater than the expiration period) MAC adresses are used by DHCP for mapping/reconciliation etc.
One possibility would be to used a fixed IP temporarily until all DHCP servers have seen this laptop, Theory say's you should be ok afterwards to return to DHCP as this would be the stored preferred IP.

Notebook fails to renew IP address

This user has been at this site once every three weeks, and each time the same problem occurs. Each time the IP address matches those within the paramaters used on the server at his usual home network. I have several notebook users that travel between LAN's, but this is the only notebook that has these errors.

Thanks for trying.

Notebook fails to renew IP address

The only thing I can think of is that the 1) the lease on the IP address from the home network is excessivly long and/or 2) when the notebook attaches to the alternate network it attempts to locate the DHCP server for the home network using the settings it obtained from the home network. If the settings severly limit the scope by either a restrictive subnet mask, a gateway that does not exist, and does not allow broadcast resolution the notebook could be looking for a DHCP server but cannot resove an address beyond itself. When you force it to release and renew it then has no parameters to go by and correctly broadcasts for the nearest DHCP server.

I have run across this problem when a system was setup on one subnet but then transferredto another subnet. The two subnets had completely different IPs and the masking was restricted to the last octet.

Hope this leads you the right direction.
