Notebook log on to many networks

By Borg7of9 ·
I have to log on to different networks, some domains some workgroups. I always have to change the settings, and go through a re-boot, not to mention I hate having to sift trough all my profiles to find documents! (yes when I am in a rush, I accept default my docs settings)

Also, sometimes when I try to join a domain, it says no domain controller found, when in fact its there, I log on with a the system right beside mine as a test. I am assuming, something from the last network I was in, is doing this, but as it works sometimes, and sometimes not, have no idea what is causing it.

Any tips/tricks for users who havwe to login to different networks all the time, much appreciated

The most obvious thing that would cause this would be TCP/IP settings. Windows XP is pretty good about releasing IP addresses, but some other OS's, even Win2K are not so good. Win2K, particularly, is famous for using an AIPA address at the slightest provocation. When you can't find the domain controller, do you check your ipconfig to see if this is the problem? Are you seeing any other symptoms, event ID errors, etc., when this happens? You should optimally have this laptop set to always use DHCP, but that of course depends upon all of the networks you log on to having a DHCP server.

You know, I hope, that you don't have to actually join the local domain unless you need to administer it in some way or use a local email, database or proxy server that requires authentication on the domain. If you're just accessing documents and files, as long as you have an IP address on the local subnet, and a local DNS/WINS server, you will be able to browse the network and when you try to access the various resources, it will ask you for a login at that point.

Hope this helps!

In our office we use a program called NetSwitcher. It makes life so much easier.
