Notify sender if mail unread after time

By jim.schromm ·
Is there a way in Exchange to notify a sender if an email has not been responded to after a specified amount of time? It doesn't seem to be a standard rule.

As far as I know, this requires custom programming. I'm aware of a few workflow applications based on Exchange that use a similar function but I believe it was created within the application program.

The standard rules wizard does not support this type of rule. You can easily implement such a rule using the Exchange Event Scripting Agent and VBScript. Conceptually, here's what you'd do:

1. Using VBScript w/ CDO, create a script that spins through a folder checking each messages unread property and the date the message was received. (Use the CDO GetFirst/GetNext methods to access messages in a folder). If unread is true and the message was received earlier than your time limit, then use CDO to create a message to the user notifying them (or someone else, even) that the message hasn't been read.

2. Add your script as an agent to the user's inbox folder, and schedule it to run at some interval using the Event Scripting dialog.(You'll have to install the Event Scripting Agent Add-In for Outlook to do this).

Tom Rizzo's "Programming Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Exchange" is a pretty good reference for this type of stuff; particularly Ch. 12 & 13. Good Luck!
