Novell 4.11 and Memory

By mikez1017 ·
I have a Novell 4.11 server with 256 meg. of memory in the server. During the post I see all the memory, but after novell is running and I use the memory command all I see is 64 megs. What do you think is the problem. I also tried to use the register memory command and it still only sees 64 megs.

Check to see if the motherboard only has a cacheable range of 64 meg of ram. I don't believe that novell uses anything other than ram that is cached.

One possible cause is that the initial DOS start-up is screwing things up. Novell had this suggestion...

Troubleshooting
- Remove anything in the DOS startup files (config.sys and autoexec.bat).
- simplify the Netware bootup NCF files (IOstart, MSstart, MSauto, IOauto).
- remove SET parameters like Register memory <xxxx> <yyyy> and Start and end memory unclaimed blocks...
- configure the system correctly (EISA config, Hardware conflicts)
- remove boards that would have boot precedence (e.g. Virus scanner board)

Cause
HIMEM.SYS and SMARTDRV.EXE somehow influenced the way Netware is able to register the memory correctly.

Give that a shot...

Another hint...

Make sure that you are calling REGISTER MEMORY command before the MOUNT ALL command in Startup.NCF
