This one is actually intentionally "water-coolered".

by apotheon In reply to Now I want to say, right ...

The bit about being less charming was meant as a bit of a joke. The bit about "malice" was merely overstated slightly, for lack of a better term. I do not tend to think you actually want to hurt anyone; I just think that you use hurtful tactics (hurtful of discourse, that is) without considering the larger context.

Discourse? Let me tell you about discourse...

by AnsuGisalas In reply to This one is actually inte ...

If I was to hurt Discourse, that old hag would rise up, and wring the life and ichors out of me.
Discourse is well-nigh unhurtable.
Take the time to find some "Discourse Analysis" study logs. That's transcripts of recordings of real, non-scripted, spontaneous conversations, with all of the oral gestures of the participants included.
What you will find, is, that we humans spew the most incomprehensible gibberish at each other, almost all of the time... and yet, we all get it. Very rarely do we need to ask WTF the other one is saying. Even if the other one is juggling a storyline that he's inadvertently tied into multiple overlapping loops... it's not a problem for us to understand.
Like the asterisk: When we hear a non-standard gesture, and its reason is not forthcoming, we usually work with two simultaneous assumptions; A) It's coincidental, and B) It's purposeful.
A is the loop breaker, it cuts out B if B takes too long. B, however, is where we confront our fellow humans, acknowledge their humanity as equal to our own, allow for their right to express what they will as they will it - and then we try to take on their perspective, seeing how and why and what for - if we succeed.

Floating post lacking easily available context. We gonna have some fun around here before we disappear into the ether.

And why does it show three posts when at this point there are only two?

Couldn't be

that it counts the "Just in" too?
But the old code used to also add a post to the tally out of nowhere.

What's wrong with good, old-fashioned, black-heart malice? Didn't you spend time in the military preparing to do exactly that?

Not malice

Mindlessness. Much worse.

The idea was to "practice like you'll play." The theory behind it to make automatic your reactions to a given set of stimuli. The problem being that the automatic response can contribute to overkill and friendly-fire incidents.

The last statement is from the observations of others. I consider myself extremely lucky to have no first-hand experience of the non-practice variety.

edit: close quotes

Practice like you'll play

by AnsuGisalas In reply to Further

I think that's generally a good idea.
Of course, I think over here they include the "automatically positively identify your enemy before shooting" into the play and practice. (Like, IDing a Leopard 1 as a T-55 is unthinkable)

I think overkill and friendly fire mainly rises from putting complete idiots in command... of course the idiots affect the ones they train and deploy, too, but the idiots in command alone, I surmise, are the main problem.

Lately I haven't heard much about FF incidents, but I haven't been listening either.
