Hope I got your attention! Okay, I’m 20 years old, finishing up my second year of college. I’ve just come across the realization that I no longer wish to be a music major. I have a deep yearning to enter the IT field. I’ve always been fascinated by every aspect of computing, and I spend more time on my computer than anywhere else.
Here’s my problem: I don’t like college. I’ve been here (University of Arkansas) for two years and the only thing I enjoy is the atmosphere. I love my friends andit’s very “easy going” around here. However, when it comes to classes and professors, I just don’t quite mesh well. I think my problem is, I’m ready to grow up, ready to put away my childish things and become a man.
SO…I’ve been looking into the CS program here and I’d have to surrender a year and a half to change degrees. Music and Computer Sciences don’t have that much in common (who’d have thought it?). I’m looking at being in college another 3-4 years. This is not something that excites me. The last week or so I stumbled upon IT certifications and I’m definitely intrigued. There is a company in town called Staffmark that offers Novell, MCSE, Cisco, A+ training and some other things as well. The cost of this is reasonable considering the timeframe in which I could be finished. Staffmark also offers job placement to its graduates.
I think I’ve got my heart set on Staffmark, but will certifications do me any good? Will anyone hire me without a college degree? I’d like to go the quick route, but I realize quickest is not always best. However, if the quick way is ALSO the way that interests me most, why should i NOT pursue this, atleast at this point?
