NT 4 sp 6a Printing Problems

By allan ·
Old Print server, NT4 sp 5,ran fine till hard drive crashed.
Purchased a new server, installed NT4 sp4 then applied sp 6a.Re-added all 60 printers with the same drivers. Started having problems with the Spooler hanging up.Edited registry to "UseNonRFCCompliantPorts" (above 1024 instead of only the original 10, 721-731)-No help
Event Log has Event ID 2510 and "unable to map error 1722" The only reference I can find to this at JSIINC.com and says it may be corrupt Jet-Admin but that's notinstalled on the machine.
Jobs will hang in the que and opening the hung printers show "printing/spooling" as the status. Sometimes the jobs will printup to an hour later, if I haven't deleted the files in the spool folder.
This is causing me severe headaches cured only by large doses of alcohol :-)
Any and all suggestions will be appreciated.
I will provide more info for anyone requesting it.
Thanks, Al

Try stopping and restarting the Spooler service through the Services applet. If this does not work, check to make sure that you have at least 50MB of free space. If it doesn't change the spool host drive and reboot the system. In addition sometimes it'sneccesary to delete the .SPL files from the spooler and restart.

You may have a resource conflict.
Start up Windows NT Diagnostics and see if everything matches the actual hardware.

If that dosen't work I would uninstall SP6a and return to SP5 unless it is needed for other reasons.

Also check your task manager and see how much your cpu utilization is. You may have one or more process that are using up all your cpu time.

let me know how it turns out.

CPU is less than 30%
Going back to sp 5 may be the the next step.

are you using multiple network protocols? in particular are you using lanmanager?
If you are, I recommend you use only the needed ones and try to stick to TCP/IP only if you can.

The only other thing I see different is you didn't insall SP5 before 6. Might try that.

Good luck

What clients are using the print server? I remember that there were some issues pre-sp5 with 95/98 clients printing to NT causing the problems you describe. I know you say you're on SP6, but if you have a mix of clients it might be worth diverting your 95/98 users elsewhere to see if it fixes the problem.

The majority of the clients are NT workstations with some 98 machines.
This is more of a problem with the server setup.
