NT 4.0 and WINS

By zepolie ·
Had a PDC and BDC at one side of the WAN. Moved the BDC to other side. Had to give it a new IP address, so we changed the WINS server addresses on PDC and BDC. Now BDC cannot "see" PDC. Put LMHOSTS file on BDC, the addresses on BDC's side are static, on PDC's side are DHCP. Can ping PDC, but cannot find it by name. Any suggestions?

Do you have DNS enabled/configured correctly on the two machines? Check to make sure the settings didn't get messed up when you added the new information (very unlikely, but possible).

Just my $0.02. :)

Hi, check your wins database and make sure old IPs are not still active. If some are you can tombstone them (you also can run scavenge). Hope this helps

It is not enough information to resolve this problem.
Try to add PULL/PUSH sinhronization between two WINS server (if use different WINS-servers).

Did that also, I tell ya folks, we have tried everything short of re-installing server. Something is very elusive in this situation.

Your DC's should be registering with the WINS server automatically and you shouldn't be mucking with the WINS service, especially DC WINS entries have unique characteristics. Be sure your BDC is in P-node and that you point it's WINS server to the proper IP address. This will ensure point-to-point WINS resolution, with no broadcasts.

I understand that the BDC's should be registering with the WINS server. Unfortunately, it was not. I had to "muck" with the WINS service, in that moving the BDC necessitated changing the IP address. (router on the other side) It is in P-node. In either case, since I only had the operating system on my c drive, I just gave up and re-installed server. This kept all my data on my scsi drives intact, and the fresh install fixed everything.
