NT 4.0 auto activate screen saver with p

By teckllow ·
NT 4.0 WS attached to network. Screen saver should activate after 1 minute of inactivity. Global users login to the network with this WS. How to activate the screen saver with password protected option regardless of any user? The password is the user ID to domain.

Use poledit.exe to create a system policy to activate a screensaver. For password, show
%username%.

The default NT policies do not include a flexible screensaver section. On the WS, open regedit and drill down to HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop. In this key you'll see:
SCRNSAVE.EXE = (the screen saver you wish to use, w/path)
ScreenSaveTimoute = (how many ms you want the screen saver to activate)
ScreenSaveIsSecure = (make this "1" to require a password)
This will affect any "new" user that logs in. To correct existing users, in that same HKEY_USERS hive, besides ".DEFAULT" change the other users as well. Same paths.

If you create a simple .REG file that you can call in a login script, you won't have to manually edit each user's registry settings. When they logon, it will happen automaticlly. Just enter the following in a text editor:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]"SCRNSAVE.EXE"="C:\\WINNT\\black16.scr"
"ScreenSaverIsSecure"="1"
"ScreenSaveTimeOut"="60"
"ScreenSaveActive"="1"
Blank Line Goes Here

Save as, for example, SCRNSAVE.REG, and call that file from a login script for the users of that workstation.
