NT 4.0 Re-install

By matt.calhoun ·
I have question for you. I need to re-install winnt40 server, which is a file server and a bdc.
Is there anyway I can copy a certain file which contains all the server shares and permissions, so when the rebuild is complete I can copy that file back and will not have to create same shares with permissions.

Thank You

Are you just doing a repair install over the top of an existing installation, or are you going the new installation route?

If you are just doing a repair installation, all your settings (shares, permissions) should remain intact (make sure you have a good backup just in case).

If you are doing a new installation, copying the info from the old to the new installation won't work.

Permissions (and to a lesser extent, the shares themselves) are tied to the SID of the computer that hosts the shares. Even though you are reinstalling the OS on the exact same computer, you will end up with a new SID.

Also, by reinstalling the OS, you are effectively removing the server from the domain which disconnects all users from the shares automatically. You will also have to remap all shares to the appropriate users (unless they are automatically mapped at log-on through scripts).

Use REGEDIT. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Service\lanmanserver\Shares. This is where all your share data is stored. Export this as a reg file. I normally call this "SHARES.REG" Now anytime you want to restore these shares and their share properties just double click the reg file you created.
Test it out, works like a charm :-)

There is an scopy command that comes with the NT Resource Kit that perserves the file permissions and file ownership. It will not save share information but shares are easy to recreate manually. I have used it serveral times.

Thanks Norm
