NT 4.5 SBS console

By pctech ·
I have a problem with a NT 4.5 SBS server (SP6a) I can no longer access the SBS management console.
I have followed the Microsoft Knowledge base article 222531 and reinstalled the console and everything appears Ok until I restart the server and then the old problem is back again. When I try to access the console from the start menu, I get the error 'page cannot be displayed' like the error page that you get when you type in an incorrect URL. I can browse HTML pages on the hard drive so I know Internet Explorer is Ok (V6) but I am not sure how to check IIS or even if I need to. Can anybody suggest something else to try?

Testing the IIS is simple: try the URL http://localhost/ in IE6. SBS4.5 installs with a default home page, even if you don't use it for a website. If it displays correctly, IIS is working. If not, you'll need to use Internet Services Manager to find out why. I had this problem so often on SBS4.5, the Console just disappearing overnight, that I eventually removed Proxy Server 2.0 from the machine, as it seemed to be related. Once that was gone (and I installed a freeware proxy server) it didn't happen again. I don't recommend this solution, though - that was just a desperate move by an admin whose company refused him training or tools.

The KB article has been greatly improved since I last saw it, so I'd try all the steps mentioned before doing anything drastic. And remember that, after you reinstall anything from the original disks, you must reinstall SP6a. Failure to do so can lead to all sorts of odd problems.
