NT & 98 small network

By deezel_boy ·
Greetings all!
I am implementing a small network in my office, 3 users. 2 98 machines and an NT 4 machine. What would be the best way to implement this net?? How do I set it up?? I already have the NICs in the machines, also I have a 10 port hub. Iam not positive on how to set this network up and which protocols to use, beui, smb, tcp/ip???
Please help!

PLug NICs (Network Cards) into hub. Setup workstations for w 'workgroup' network, use netbeui if there will be no internet. Use the same 'workgroup name' on all of the workstations. That's it...

I assume you mean NT workstation for the NT 4 machine.
Make sure you have file and print sharing installed for the 98 machines. Plug all of the pc's in the hub. Use Netbeui (TCP/IP has a lot of overhead for such a small network) as your protocol and just make your network shares when you are done. If you have questions or problems, feel free to email me. Good luck.

in addition to the last two answers make sure that 98 and nt installations pick up the correct nics - use the suppliers drivers if available- 98 can also be a pain when using "network" with certain cards that it deems pnp and reboots with it's best guess, use system in control panel to delete old drivers and choose new drivers from a floppy or download from mnfr.

OK, I would go with netbeui unless internet access for all machines is required. There's no configuration, protocol-wise. Install Client for Microsoft Networks, and File and printer sharing for your 98 boxes. Put all machines in the same workgroup. As far as NT goes, installing networking (if you haven't done so) installs the server service, so that should be OK, but you must create user accounts on the NT box for the users of the 98 machines. Set the 98 boxes to use MS Networking as theirdefault logon in the network properties. Create your shares.
