NT and 98 workstations looking for 2000

What would cause various NT4 and 9x workstations to lose visibility of a 2000 server unless a fully qualified domain name is used? I am thinking a WINS issue...

Hopefully you have not converted your W2K server to native mode. (That would do it and it is irreverible.) From what you say here it looks like a DNS issue. In your TCP/IP properties on the clients, try setting the IP address of your W2K Server as a DNS server.
