NT and K6 - Data loss and corruption

By wcv ·
A client of mine has put together a LAN using what appears to be a upgraded workstation as the server. They are running a DFI motherboard with 256MB of RAM to support a AMD K6 450Mhz processor. For storage they have a multipartitioned 8 gig MaxtorIDE drive. Two partitions are FAT and one 4 Gig partition is NTFS. The NOS is NT 4 with service pack 5 and using TCP/IP as the protocol with unique IPs.

This server runs MS Exchange for email and provides storage for common accounting data. The accounting program is a microfocus cobol program called Business Visions 2000 and this 16 bit application runs on Windows 95/98 workstations accessing the data stored on the server.

The problem that is occuring is lost transactions in the accounting system. Things like lost postings to various data structures or missing information from a posting. This is a frequent error but not constant. Since this is periodic and the accounting systems has not shown such problems in the past, I feel it is in the hardware

You say this lan has just been put together - havwe you checked that this accounting package is a network version? It may have worked OK stand alone.

If it was hardware, I would expect that exchange would have had some complaints by now.

cheers

This is most likely a record or file locking problem with your data base.
Scenario. Workstation 1 reads record xxxx.
work station 2 reads record xxxx.
workstation writes updates to record xxxx.
workstation1 i s still working with old copy.
workstation 1 changes record xxxx and writes update.
this update write over top of workstation2's changes
Bingo! lost transaction.

Assuming that the accounting program is a network version, check the workstation memory requirements, NIC's, and the hub. We had problem when we updated for Y2K. We went to all 3COM NIC's and 64MB of Ram on the workstations. All the problems wentaway. Good luck
