NT and K6 – Data loss and corruption

by wcv . Updated 25 years, 9 months ago

A client of mine has put together a LAN using what appears to be a upgraded workstation as the server. They are running a DFI motherboard with 256MB of RAM to support a AMD K6 450Mhz processor. For storage they have a multipartitioned 8 gig MaxtorIDE drive. Two partitions are FAT and one 4 Gig partition is NTFS. The NOS is NT 4 with service pack 5 and using TCP/IP as the protocol with unique IPs.

This server runs MS Exchange for email and provides storage for common accounting data. The accounting program is a microfocus cobol program called Business Visions 2000 and this 16 bit application runs on Windows 95/98 workstations accessing the data stored on the server.

The problem that is occuring is lost transactions in the accounting system. Things like lost postings to various data structures or missing information from a posting. This is a frequent error but not constant. Since this is periodic and the accounting systems has not shown such problems in the past, I feel it is in the hardware
