A couple of Microsoft DHCP questions I’m having trouble find documented:
Number 1: Does the DHCP server “cycle” itself to free leases that have expired, and if so, can I modify the period associated with this cycle? I understand the concept of lease expiration times, and I’m familiar with the “call and response” cycle for obtaining new leases, or renewing existing leases, including the requests for renewal at different times during the lease period. I ask because I can see some leases in the “Active Leases” window that are “grayed out” — the property detail tells me the leases have expired, but they don’t appear to have released; the addresses still appear as part or the allocated address total in the active lease window.
Second:Also in the “Active Lease Window”, I have some machine names (workstations) showing up twice. The second icon for these particular machine names shows a picture of a telephone in front of the CRT. There isn’t consistency here – some are laptops with single PCMCIA NIC’s and some are desktop machines. At any rate, there are NOT multiple NIC’s connecting and requesting I.P. leases on these machines, yet I’m burning two addresses from my pool for each one. I can manually delete a second address, but it renews. The MAC address for each adapter/address appearing in the Active Leases window is unique…I can’t find documentation about this either. Does anyone know what’s up with this?
