NT / Exch. will not shutdown

By fbmmcp ·
Hi. I have an NT 4.0 Exchange Server that is slowly losing services and will not shutdown/restart from the Start button. I cannot open Exch. Admin. or User Manager. I cannot shutdown Exch. Sys. Attend. service. Is my only resort to reset or power down? Have I been hacked? HELP! TechNet has none.

Thanks, Fran

Tough to say what is happening. What other software do you have running on that server? Also, have you tried closing all the services one at a time and then attempting a restart? You may have another program like a backup exec or virus protection causing the problem.

I have IIS 4.0 (our web server), Proxy 2.0, NT 4 sp6, Exch. 5.5, Timbukto, Backup Exec agent. No, I haven't tried to shut any services down except Exch. I'll try that tonight. No virus stuff on this machine. It may be that the machine has run out ofresources-memory and needs to be reset. I hate it!

Well, I reset the server after attempting to shutdown every service that was still active. I could not shutdown any Exch. services or NT system service. Nothing allowed me to restart or shutdown. The reset went well, re-initialized the mirror set and Exch. is back up better than it was. My ulcer is doing fine now....
