NT, IP addresses, and gateways

By lkane ·
Wan with 3 locations using different default gateways and IP schemes. Users travel to different locations and need access to the network. Without having the user change IP and gateway addresses, what is the best way to set them up....? How can DHCP help?

NT, IP addresses, and gateways

Hi, DHCP automatically assigns an IP address and subnet mask to each client (and default gateway header information if applicable). This relieves you from having to manually enter and change ip addresses, subnet masks, etc. on each client. Also, youcan set up a dhcp server at each location so IP lease process does not have to cross slow wan links, for example. DHCP itself does not cause a lot of wan traffic, but it does cause some so you need to consider the number of mobile users, your links and how many addresses you need. Setting up DHCP is not hard, but it takes some planning especially if you have routers involved. Essentially you set up a scope (or scopes) that establishes an IP address range for clients and exclude IP addresses fordevices that need static configuration (routers, servers, etc.). There is detailed information about dhcp at www.microsoft.com and microsoft technet (DHCP also can be integrated tightly with wins and dns). Hope this helps.

The following articles will help you to implement DHCP Server on your Windows NT server (please make sure that no space is inserted in the URL string),

Install DHCP server at each location with differenct scope of IP address.

Each time a user roam around. Run "winipcfg /renewal" on Win9x
Run "ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew" on NT

that way, it will get the proper IP config while it is atthat location.

Note: I think there is a 3rd party software that does this but don't remember the name.
