NT Permissions

By jakec ·
I have a directory structure on one of my NT servers that contains over 2000 folders, all with different permissions. In the even that someone overwrote the permissions or they were just lost from an NT glitch, I would have no way of restoring them to their original state. Is there a utility with the NT Resource Kit that will allow me to create a dump of the permission structure into a text file or database? And could I use that same utility to restore the permissions from that file should theybe lost?

If there is no free software out there to do this function, any recommendations on something to purchase would also be greatly appreciated.

And, for curiousity, does server2k address some of these issues?

Thanks,
jake

Well, I don't know any free software, but you might want to try Hyena at http://www.adkins-resource.com/. About two years ago I used it to merge NT networks. It allowed us to dump permissions to a file, edit the file, then reload it to the network. Might work for you.

Don't you have or believe in Tape Backup? Even the simplistic programs capture permissions and most will allow you to accomplish a selective restore. I am not looking for points on this, it is hard to understand why you are looking in this directionif your backup is adiquate and functional...

Just a thought, Ray

Ray,

We do use Veritas Backup Exec but I am not aware of a way to restore permissions only. Is that something you know how to do?

Thanks for the answer. I have used Hyena before to dump permissions but was not sure if it's capabilities putting them back.

There are a few different Resource Kit tools that lets you work with NTFS permissions in a bit more detail than the default ones with NT, but to accomplish the level of work you are suggesting even with the RK tools would involve a considerable scripting effort at least.

There is a 3rd party Software available, Security Explorer from Small Wonders Software, that basically does it all in regards to NTFS permissions and Share permissions for NT. I've been using it for a couple of years now and it works great. Backup and Restore of NTFS permissions is just one of its features. (NO, I'm not afiliated with the company, but along with Hyena it's one of the best tools I've used).

More info at:

Good luck, -Ewing

The best software I found with regards to permissions is the security explorer.
But if you want something from the resource kit. Try to look unto xcacls.exe it is an enhance version of cacls.exe has more feature. This is included on the NT Resource Kit. I've been using it for years. I use it during upgrades where we have to transfer home directory and other files from old disk to new disk and still restore the permissions.
Hope this helps.
