NT Policies

By baird.jason ·
Here is the situation...
Windows NT 4 PDC
Windows NT 4 BDC
Directory replication service started on both.

If I recreate a policy to be used on NT Workstation and W2k Pro clients, must I wipe out the locally stored copy of a particular users nt profile? I cannot seem to get these policies to take effect.

Is the policy file being replicated properly to both the PDC and BDC? You should be able to tell this by checking directly in the Netlogon folder on both machines to be sure your most recent policy file is there. Do your users regularly (i.e., daily) log off or shut down their systems and then log back on the next morning? The policies are applied to the user's profile when he/she logs on, so a logoff/logon is needed before a policy change takes effect. Hope this helps!

Check in policies editor that default computer or computers have: Network\SystemPoliciesUpdate\Remote Update-enabled.

Both answers 1&2 have merit but W2K machines will not load a NT policy. That is NT has 72 policy setting and W2K has many many more. You would need to import the setting from the NT to the each W2K machine. It would be much easier to upgrade the PDCto W2K server and run in mixed mode. Then the policy issue would be easier to maintain. You could set group policy for W2K machines and copy the NT policy for NT/98 machines to the sysvol folder that has a NETLOGON share. Suggest you read up on NT to W2K migration it will discuss how to make this work.
