There is no way to synchronise profiles for local and domain users. Profile is not just folders (like Desktop) but also a part of registry... :-((

What is the reason for them to logon locally? If they use laptops they still can logon to domain using cached credentials and local copy of their profile. Well, it is slower and there will be some answers when logging on when connected again. But, I believe it will pay.

You can do this only after the user has logged in locally. You then need to log back into the domain and go to System:User profiles tab. Copy the <Domain>\<User Account> to the <Machine>\<Account>.
This should do it.
