Which poses the greatest security threat/risk, VPN over the internet or standard dial-up over POTS to NT RAS with NT authentication, call back and preset feature enabled?

NT RAS vs VPN Internet

The real question is which one is more of a solution for you?:
Users spread out, at home, on the road, and being able to use VPN with any ISP, or a global ISP?

-or-

User having to dial into the RAS server wherever they are?

A VPN solution with encryption DES, 3DES, is much more secure than RAS.

It depends on what you need to do as the first answer stated. However is one more secure? Both rely on a secure remote access and a known number, either ip or phone. Both can be found by query or calling. Having callback and a preset number would certainly make the ras more secure though a persistent person could probably find a access. Ras also allows access to systems not attached to the internet. I think it is hard to say one is more secure. It depends on your needs, remote access from anywhere, local dialup versus long distance, mobile users versus static, sensitivity of data. Just remember that any connection can be comprimised and a secure solution needs to look at the user and their remote systems and password usage.
