I’ve heard that VNC by Bell Labs is a good one. I use SMS 2.0 myself but it is too big and clunky for small shops. Look at this web site for links to VNC and others:

I’ve used several the two best that I’ve found are McAfee’s Remote Desktop (which is the cheapest!!) Or MS SMS Remote Control (If you only want remote management don’t spend $3,000 on SMS)

If you want to grab control of the video/mouse/keyboard, I suggest VNC. Best of all, it is free!

We’ve had a lot of success by using VNC on all our servers. We’ve even installed it on the NT/2000 workstations as a manual service which can then be enabled whenever we need to ‘see what the user is seeing’. It even works with Mac/Unix terminals!

Go with VNC. It works great for the remote control aspect. It can be password protected and will run as a service. The product is free so that makes it better than PCAnywhere. We have setup VNC to replace the remote control features of SMS on all our serves and Win2000 boxes.

Have you considered NetMeeting 3.0? This is a freebie from Microsoft and works very well. We’ve used it to manage servers around the world. Since is comes from Microsoft, there’s a better chance that it will still work with service packs and future software versions.

Have a look at Remotely Anywhere, great little program, and one of the best things is that you do not need a client end, only a web browser to connect! I’ve used it and found it to be very good and reliable. The other option is VNC which consideringit’s FREE is excellent, very small client program 170Kb with no install on the client the server side can be installed remotely (with a little bit of registry hacking) and is very good, I have used this over a 56K dial-up and while not the fastest its usable and saved me a 2 hour journey on more than 1 occasion.
